Since 1 July 2025 an e-step in the Netherlands needs a licence plate. Sounds like a hassle, but with a type-approved model you hardly notice it. Here is how it works.
In short
- An e-step is a special moped and must be registered with the RDW.
- Does the model have a national type approval, like the SELANA Alpha? Then the manufacturer arranges the licence plate.
- At SELANA you pay a one-off EUR 55,00 for it, including the licence plate.
Route 1: a type-approved model
If the whole model is approved, the RDW does not need to inspect your individual step. We register your step. You get the registration card and the plate, and can insure it right away. No photos, no appointment.
You pay a one-off EUR 55,00 when you order: EUR 50,00 goes to the RDW, EUR 5,00 is admin.
Route 2: registering it yourself
Do you have another approved model that has not been registered yet? Then you apply for the licence plate yourself. Since 1 July 2026 the RDW inspects such a step individually, by appointment at an inspection station. According to the RDW rates for 2026 that costs EUR 158,10 in total (identification EUR 58,50, assessment EUR 36,50, registration EUR 50,00 and registration in your name EUR 13,10). If the vehicle number is unreadable, EUR 59,00 is added. You pay for the inspection even if the step is not approved.

What you need for the road
- Registration card: proof of registration with the RDW.
- Licence plate: blue, smaller than a moped plate, mounted vertically at the back.
- WA insurance: required and linked to your licence plate. With ANWB from EUR 6,28 per month.

How long does registration take?
With the SELANA Alpha it runs alongside your delivery. With an individual inspection it takes longer.
Can I transfer the licence plate if I sell?
Yes, just like with a moped. Also read buying a second-hand e-step.
Do I need a driving licence or helmet?
No, neither. You do need to be 16 or older. All the rules are in e-step rules 2026.
