ANWB introduces the first e-scooter insurance in the Netherlands in partnership with SELANA. The insurance was developed in response to the first national type approval from the RDW for an e-scooter in the Netherlands. With this, ANWB supports the development of innovative mobility and alternative means of transport. In addition to third-party liability (WA), the insurance also covers theft and damage.
Electric scooters are rapidly growing in popularity. ANWB has been receiving questions about the insurability of e-scooters for some time. A wide variety of models is being sold through webshops.
Joris Smink, distribution manager two-wheelers at ANWB: "The big problem with these scooters is that they do not have RDW approval, which means they are not allowed on public roads. As a result, if you are involved in an accident, you are not covered for damage you cause to others. This can have major financial consequences. There are also no identifying marks by which you can tell whether the scooter is safe."
Safety and consumer protection
The RDW recently granted the first e-scooter, the SELANA Alpha, national type approval. This means the e-scooter meets all legal requirements set for vehicles. Owners can now legally and properly insured ride the scooter on public roads.

More scooters on the streets
Joris Smink: "Now that the RDW has recently granted the first e-scooter in the Netherlands national type approval, I expect many more to follow soon. It is a practical means of transport, especially in the city. You don't have to deal with traffic jams and you can park the scooter easily. I think we will see the scooter more and more on our streets in the future."
What does this mean for e-scooter users?
- You may only use the road with an RDW-approved scooter.
- The e-scooter has a blue license plate and you insure it as a moped via Compare and take out moped insurance | ANWB
- ANWB insurance covers (personal injury) damage to third parties in the event of an accident or collision.
