The registration fee of €50 is exactly the administrative cost that the RDW charges to register a newly approved e-scooter (classified as a special moped) in the Dutch vehicle register. Since the new registration requirement came into effect on 1 July 2025, this fee is a mandatory step to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads.
These are direct government costs (officially "Registering a vehicle in the licence plate register") whereby the manufacturer or dealer does not apply any profit margin.
Checklist: What do you need for the road?
Before you ride off, you must meet the following three requirements:
- Licence plate card: The official proof of registration with the RDW.
- Blue licence plate: Physically mounted on the rear.
- Third-party liability insurance: A statutory liability insurance linked to your licence plate.
Registration Cost Overview 2026
| Item | Cost | Status |
|---|---|---|
| RDW registration | €50 | Free gift for early SELANA customers |
| Physical licence plate | ~€15 – €25 | Gift from SELANA |
| Type approval | Priceless* | Included |
Note: The registration fee of €50 only applies to vehicles that already have an official RDW type approval. It is not possible for consumers to have their own non-approved e-scooter (such as a standard Xiaomi or Segway) registered for this amount.
Why an approved scooter is essential
Riding a non-approved e-scooter in 2026 is not only risky, but also costly. See the difference:
- With SELANA: Fully legal and insured.
- Illegal e-scooter: Risk of a fine of €410, immediate confiscation of the vehicle, and no insurance coverage in the event of an accident (meaning you bear all damage costs yourself).
Licence plate requirements
Since switching from the old insurance stickers to official licence plates, the new plates for light electric vehicles (LEVs) must meet strict criteria:
- Design: The plate is blue and smaller than the standard moped plate.
- Placement: The RDW requires this plate to be mounted on the rear of the e-scooter in a strictly vertical position.
Because SELANA has obtained the first national RDW type approval for an e-scooter, our vehicles are currently the standard for this new legal process in the Netherlands. Ready to hit the road legally? View our approved SELANA E-scooter!
