An e-step is a vehicle, so traffic rules apply. Stick to them and you ride worry-free. For anyone who wants to know where the limits are: below are the official 2026 rates, and how to avoid them easily.
In short
- Ride an RDW-approved e-step with a licence plate and WA insurance.
- Follow the normal traffic rules, just like on a bike.
- Then you have nothing to worry about.

How to ride worry-free
- Choose an approved e-step. Only models on the RDW list are allowed on the road. See which ones.
- Get a licence plate. With the SELANA Alpha we arrange it when you order, for a one-off EUR 55,00.
- Insure your step. WA with ANWB costs from EUR 6,28 per month. Here is how.
- Ride like you would on a bike. On the cycle path, phone away, lights on in the dark, on your own.
Which vehicles are never allowed on the road?
Hoverboards, electric skateboards, onewheels and monowheels have no handlebar. That is why they can never be approved. Read which electric vehicles are not allowed.
