While a framework of requirements exists, the Netherlands stands out for its exceptionally thorough evaluation process. This approach sharply contrasts with the more lenient policies seen in many other countries.
The RDW's stringent approach is driven by a clear objective: to ensure that only responsible manufacturers introduce safe vehicles to Dutch roads. By setting such high standards, the Netherlands aims to avoid the safety issues and public concerns that have plagued eSTEP rollouts in other cities worldwide.
This strict vetting process reflects the Dutch commitment to road safety and sustainable urban mobility. It challenges manufacturers to innovate and produce eSTEPs that meet the highest safety and quality standards, potentially setting a new benchmark for the industry globally.
There are two parts to legalising a vehicle of this category in the Netherlands:
- Technical inspection: Does the vehicle physically check all the boxes of the legislative requirements
- Manufacturing processes: Is the documentation that ensures high quality and conform production up to the expected standards set by the RDW
- We've been working for 5 years to create the first legal eSTEP in the Netherlands
- Significant investment and design refinements have made SELANA Alpha the safest eSTEP worldwide, capable of passing the strictest legislation
- Technical Compliance: SELANA Omega has passed the RDW's (Dutch Transport Authority) technical inspection, confirming our vehicle's physical compliance with regulations.
- Ongoing Collaboration: We've had numerous meetings with the RDW and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to ensure we meet all requirements.
- The RDW is currently reviewing our manufacturing process (results beginning of September).
- We've adapted our processes according to multiple feedback meetings and are confident that we now have everything in place.
- Once our manufacturing documentation is approved, RDW will carry out an audit on our production processes physically at our production facility.
- Full approval anticipated by the end of 2024
- Production will begin immediately following approval, based on pre-order demand
- SELANA Alpha is on track to become fully legal in the Netherlands by late 2024.
- This means you will be able to have your eSTEP insured and it can be legally ridden in the Netherlands.
- By pre-ordering now, you'll be among the first to own a legal e-step when production begins.
- We're committed to delivering a safe, legal, and innovative eSTEP to revolutionise urban mobility in the Netherlands.
